One week into 2011, the temperature is dropping, the snow is falling, and the Miramichi River is freezing. That can only mean one thing... it's time for some winter recreation! Although Miramichi is home to a number of trail systems, I'm going to have to be a bit biased here and promote French Fort Cove.
Just about everyone knows about the Miramichi Rotary Pond Hockey Tournament held at the Cove each year (this year from Feb. 4-7), but what about the rest of the season? Many of the trails at French Fort Cove are regularly groomed for prime hiking, skiing, or snowshoeing all winter long, not to mention the abundance of geocaches that are scattered amongst the Cove's vast wilderness just waiting to be discovered.
So, what will you be doing this winter? Personally, I despise cold temperatures. I'd go as far as saying I'm one of the few people actually pulling for global warming :) But, I'm a Miramichier through and through, which means I am all too familiar with the deep cold of January, so I might as well make the most of it. I'll probably see if I can check off some geocache finds this season at French Fort Cove, and possibly other places around Miramichi.
I'm not much of a sports nut; I'm Canadian, so I like hockey, but I've never really played ice hockey before, other than some back yard scrimmages and stuff like that. So, between the cold and a lack of sporting activity, I don't get out much in the winter months.
Anyway, if I do venture out into the great white yonder this season, I'll be on the lookout for you -- I'm not going to be the only one out there freezing, even if I have to strap you to a toboggan and drag you around town :)
Seriously though, get out there and enjoy the winter gifts we are lucky enough to get each year. Our coves, trails, parks, and woods are empty without our footprints.
